AL RAFFA, LAND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT,
BAHRAIN
Supporting the wider infrastructure in Bahrain
Client:
NASS Corporation
Sector:
Road infrastructure, utilities, energy
Project duration:
4 months
Scope of works
Engineering challenges
Joseph Gallagher Ltd ( JGL) successfully delivered
specialist microtunnelling works as part of the Al Rafaa
Land Development Phase 1 Project, a major infrastructure
development covering approximately 102 hectares in the
Southern Governorate of Bahrain.
The project presented a significant technical challenge
due to the steep tunnel gradient of 38mm per metre,
requiring accurate guidance and continuous monitoring
throughout the tunnelling operations to ensure
installation tolerances were maintained.
The development site is located between Sheikh Khalifa
Bin Salman Highway and Zallaq Highway and forms part
of a wider programme of infrastructure works including
road construction, stormwater drainage, sewer networks,
irrigation systems, potable water networks and electrical
distribution.
JGL was appointed by the main contractor NASS
Corporation, on behalf of the Ministry of Works Bahrain,
with design and project consultancy provided by Parsons
Corporation.
The works involved the installation of 474 metres of
microtunnelling across nine drives, forming protective
sleeves for the project’s stormwater pipeline system.
The crossings comprised:
3 drives – 59m, 3 drives – 9.25m, 3 drives – 90.25m
Six of the nine drives were launched from a single drive
shaft, requiring careful sequencing and precise tunnelling
control to maintain alignment and efficiency.

Programme delivery
The microtunnelling works were originally scheduled for
completion within a four-month contract programme.
Through efficient planning, experienced site teams and
strong coordination with the project stakeholders, JGL
successfully accelerated delivery and completed the
works in approximately 2.5 months.
Project outcome
The completed tunnels form part of the stormwater
drainage infrastructure supporting the wider Al Rafaa
land development. The successful delivery of the
works demonstrates JGL’s capability to deliver complex
microtunnelling projects within challenging ground
conditions and demanding programme requirements.
The project was delivered in close collaboration with
NASS Corporation and Parsons, ensuring seamless
integration with the wider infrastructure works across
the development.
