Case studies: Woodsmith Mine, North Yorkshire
Breaking records
This is a world record for the project at Woodsmith Mine. Prior to this achievement in the UK,
the deepest VSM Shaft was 83 metres in St Petersburg, Russia.
Herrenknecht AG issued a letter of congratulations to Sirius Minerals, Careys and Joseph
Gallager celebrating the team reaching a final shaft depth of 115.2m.
The rest of the excavation was undertaken using drill and blast techniques.
The Mineral Transport Shaft (MTS) are used to transport materials to a dedicated handling and
processing facility in Wilton.
JGL carried out the drill and blast excavation of the MTS shaft from 115m to 360m with works
completing in the Summer of 2022.
Following the completion of the MTS shaft the excavation of the underground road map of
connection tunnels at -360m was constructed to facilitate the movement of plant and material
between the working shafts.
