Five SIBS Crossings
completed in
Bahrain
A demonstration of outstanding
power, precision and resilience
across approximately 9km of
challenging ground conditions in
Bahrain.
Joseph Gallagher has successfully completed 昀椀ve
complex microtunnelling crossings as part of the
Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Trunk Sewer (SIBS) project in
Bahrain, delivering new trunk sewer infrastructure
beneath major highways and key transport
corridors.
The successful completion of these crossings
represents a signi昀椀cant contribution to Bahrain’s
wastewater infrastructure, enhancing capacity and
supporting the long-term growth and resilience of
the network.
For the longer drives, intermediate jacking stations
were provided to manage jacking forces, while the
separation plant system enabled e昀昀ective slurry
management. These operations allowed a consistent
TBM performance in the limestone ground.
All drives were successfully completed ahead of
programme, strengthened by the performance of
each specialist team, from surveying, pipe 昀椀tting,
TBM operations, tunnel crews and maintenance
personnel.
The full SIBS scheme comprises approximately
8.6km of microtunnelling, with tunnel diameters
ranging from DN1200 to DN1800.
To achieve the client’s programme
objectives, our team has deployed
昀椀ve microtunnelling machines
operating across multiple drives
simultaneously.
The project builds on our previous success in
Bahrain, following the delivery of the Zinj Trunk
Sewer (ZTS) for the same client.
The works are being carried out in close
collaboration with Haji Hassan Group (HHG),
the client, and Stantec Khonji, acting as project
consultant.
