LIVERPOOL BAY, CARBON CAPTURE SCHEME,
A pipe-jacked sleeve under the ‘live’ TRS-37 - A494 Aston Expressway
Joseph Gallagher Limited ( JGL) was appointed
by United Infrastructure as specialist trenchless
subcontractor on the Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture
and Storage (LBA CCS) Project.
This is an Eni UK initiative at the heart of the HyNet
Northwest cluster that will permanently store CO2
from regional industry in the depleted gas fields of
Liverpool Bay, initially at ~4.5 million tonnes per year.
Our scope covers the trenchless crossings on the
onshore pipeline from Stanlow AGI to Flint AGI (Work
Package 4) - over 1,000m of micro tunnelling in
DN1200 and DN1500 across the route.
TRS-37 is one of the most demanding: a 129m DN1500
pipe-jacked sleeve beneath the live A494 Aston
Expressway and a 27inch asbestos cement Welsh Water
trunk main, through highly variable glacial sands, clays
and gravels over the Coal Measures, with sub-artesian
groundwater.
Our JGL project team delivered the complete design
package in-house through the three-tier, Eni / United
Infrastructure document control regime.
This included the statement of intent, design risk
assessment, geotechnical design reports for both
shafts and the crossing, ground movement assessment,
monitoring plan and drawings.
Design was to the BTS Tunnelling Specification and BS
6164:2019, with concrete specified to DC-2 or higher for
a 50-year design life following sulphate testing. Every
governing failure mode was calculated and closed out.
This project is shortlisted for 2026 Pipeline Industries
Guild award
