Environmental compliance and sustainability are
critical to the successful delivery of projects, protecting
both the business and the environment. I believe
the importance of environmental and sustainability
management is sometimes underestimated, but it
plays a vital role in helping organisations operate
responsibly, meet client expectations, manage risks,
and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Work LIFE
From a project perspective, I add value by ensuring full
compliance with JGG’s and our clients’ environmental
and sustainability requirements. This involves
working closely with project teams to implement best
practices, provide timely reporting, and maintain high
environmental standards throughout the lifecycle of a
project. By o昀昀ering practical guidance and proactive
support, I help ensure that environmental risks are
e昀昀ectively managed, compliance obligations are met,
and sustainability objectives are achieved. This not
only delivers value to our clients but also supports
JGG in successfully delivering projects with strong
environmental performance, full compliance and an
incident-free record.
Ultimately, it is rewarding to see the positive impact
of our work, knowing that we are helping clients meet
their goals while contributing to a more sustainable
future for the industry.
Sustainable LIFE
One thing that often surprises people is how broad
and fast-moving the environmental and sustainability
profession really is. It’s a role where continuous
learning is essential, as regulations, industry standards
and sustainability requirements are constantly
evolving.
To stay e昀昀ective, you need to keep up to date and learn
something new almost every day. Many people assume
the role is mainly focused on waste management or
responding to environmental incidents such as spills.
While those aspects are important, the reality is much
wider. The role involves maintaining and continually
improving our Environmental Management System
(EMS) and Energy Management System (EnMS),
ensuring compliance with environmental legislation,
supporting project teams, engaging with clients, and
driving sustainability initiatives across the business.
A signi昀椀cant part of my role also involves sustainability
reporting and ensuring that JGG meets its legal and
regulatory obligations.
One project that stands out for me is the Liverpool Bay
Carbon Capture Project. It is a highly complex scheme
that has required a range of specialist tunnelling
techniques, challenging ground conditions, and
careful management of environmental and ecological
sensitivities.
What makes this project particularly impressive is
the number of constraints that need to be managed
simultaneously.
The works interact with sensitive ecological areas,
watercourses, major motorway crossings and busy
transport networks, all while maintaining strict
environmental standards and delivering the project
safely and e昀케ciently. As a 昀椀rst-of-its-kind project in
the UK, the scheme is helping to set new benchmarks
for the industry.
What has impressed me most is how e昀昀ectively our
teams have tackled these challenges. From planning
and engineering to environmental management
and stakeholder engagement, the collaboration and
expertise across the project have been exceptional.
Equally important is the sustainable supply chain
that supports the project, helping us deliver positive
environmental and sustainability outcomes alongside
engineering excellence.
More broadly, I am always amazed by the specialist
tunnelling expertise within JGG. We regularly deliver
projects in some of the most challenging environments
across the UK, whether that is the rugged terrain of
Snowdonia in Wales, the A9 programme in Scotland, or
works associated with HS2 in highly sensitive areas of
London.
These projects demonstrate the depth of knowledge,
technical capability and problem-solving skills within
our teams. They are also a perfect paradigm of our
LIFE values, delivering our core values of Teamwork,
Respect, Integrity, Excellence and Determination.
Seeing complex tunnelling operations delivered safely,
sustainably and successfully in such demanding
conditions is something that continually inspires me
and highlights the specialist expertise that sets Joseph
Gallagher apart.
