From carpenter to champion,
meet Phil Ryan
When Phil Ryan joined Joseph Gallagher in September
2016 as a carpenter working on the Bank Station
Upgrade, he couldn’t have imagined where his journey
would take him.
Today, as Senior Foreman on the Mandeville Road
Ventilation Shaft (MRVS) project and one of our LIFE
Champions, Phil has become a respected leader
who helps shape the culture of his project every day,
through its lifecycle.
Like many people, Phil’s 昀椀rst introduction to LIFE
was through attending workshops and taking part in
conversations with colleagues. Over time he began to
appreciate that LIFE wasn’t simply another company
initiative. It was a way of supporting and leading
people.
Inspired by leaders including Jack Murray, Gerry
Durkan, Rajbeer Singh, Frank Ward, Petru Sontea and
Steve Harris, Phil saw how positive leadership could
in昀氀uence an entire workforce. Those experiences
encouraged him to become a LIFE Champion himself.

For Phil, the role is about far more than facilitating
workshops. It is about creating an environment where
people feel comfortable speaking up, looking after
one another and challenging unsafe or unacceptable
behaviours before they become problems. One of Phil’s
proudest responsibilities is welcoming new starters
and introducing them to LIFE from the very beginning.
He believes the 昀椀rst conversations people have about
culture often become the foundation for everything
that follows.
When asked what LIFE means to him, Phil’s answer is
simple - ‘It’s about looking after people and, if we get
that right, everything else follows’.
That perhaps sums up LIFE better than anything else.
When our values become part of who we are, they don’t
stay at work.
